Demand Stricter Housing Standards to Protect Lives and Investments in Jamaica

The Issue

As a concerned citizen of Jamaica, I have witnessed the detrimental effects of unregulated development firsthand. Developers are exploiting local residents and overseas homeowners, leading to substandard and unsafe housing conditions. This unchecked development has resulted in excessive mold growth, leaking roofs, electrical defects, fire hazards, and sewage issues, posing significant risks to the health and safety of our citizens.

It is imperative that our local authorities, including the Municipal Corporation, NEPA, BSJ, NWC, REB, ARB, and the Fire Brigade, enforce stricter regulations on developers to safeguard the well-being of Jamaicans. We demand transparency in every step of the building process, with thorough inspections conducted and results made public. An oversight body must be established to prevent corruption and ensure accountability, with staff rotation to mitigate any potential conflicts of interest.

This is not just about protecting investments; it's about protecting lives as well as Jamaicas brand. Faulty construction causes defects to the homes. Once the homeowner closes on the homes, it is almost impossible for the to get redress because all the avenues traverse, have multiple road blocks. This leaves homeowners frustrated and often defeated and for the most part, they have to find additional sums of money to remedy these defects on their own.

Additionally, we call for amendments to the Access to Information Act (2002) to expedite the release of public information related to housing construction. Homeowners should not have to wait 30 working days to access vital information needed to make informed decisions about their investments.

This issue goes beyond protecting investments; it is about safeguarding lives and preserving Jamaica's reputation. Faulty construction not only diminishes the value of homes but also poses risks to occupants' safety. Homeowners are often left frustrated and financially burdened when seeking redress for defects in their homes.

We urge our local governmental bodies to take immediate action to implement proper checks and balances throughout the construction process. It is essential to ensure that homebuyers receive quality homes that meet rigorous safety standards. Your signature on this petition demonstrates your support for stricter housing standards for all residents in Jamaica.
