The Issue

As a parent of a one-year-old daughter, the safety and protection of women in India deeply concerns me. Recent cases, such as those in Manipur and Kolkata, reveal a distressing pattern of indifference and neglect by both the government and the justice system when it comes to dealing with sexual abuse cases. This is not just alarming for me as a parent; it's shocking for everyone who cares about the security and dignity of women in our society

I am equally concerned about how easy it is for our beloved prime minister to ignore such headlines and move towards other topics making these topics go under the rug. I want stricter enforcement and people should be scared to commit such crimes and atrocities to other fellow citizens and especially where women’s dignity is questioned.

The Indian legal framework includes laws intended to protect women, but they are too frequently unenforced or ignored, allowing perpetrators to evade punishment and leaving victims without justice. Reports of rape and sexual violence flood the headlines, yet little action is taken, creating an environment that implicitly condones such behavior.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a staggering 32,033 cases of rape were reported in India in 2019 alone. Yet, the conviction rate remains abysmally low at around 27.8%. These statistics paint a grim picture of a system that fails to support survivors or hold offenders accountable.

To remedy this, we need immediate changes to ensure the stringent enforcement of existing laws and heightened accountability for government officials who overlook their duties toward victims of sexual violence. The government must invest in training law enforcement officers to handle cases sensitively and supportively, and assure that investigations are pursued vigorously.

Moreover, public awareness campaigns should be amplified to break the societal stigma associated with speaking out against sexual violence. Only with a nationwide commitment to change, starting from systemic reforms and societal shifts, can we hope to create a safer environment for our daughters and all women in India.

By signing this petition, you are sending a powerful message that enough is enough. We demand accountability and action from the Indian government to protect every woman and child from sexual violence. Together, let's work towards a more just and safe society for everyone.

Sign this petition to urge the Indian authorities to take a firm stand against sexual abuse and enforcement negligence.
