Demand Strategic Reforms and Ethical Practices at Petco Stores

Demand Strategic Reforms and Ethical Practices at Petco Stores
The Issue
As dedicated employees and animal lovers, we find ourselves in the throes of unfortunate circumstances. Given Petco's recent focus on sales quota, countless employees with a deep-rooted respect for animal welfare and customer satisfaction are feeling compelled to part ways or forced to leave due to corporate greed, leaving employees to take on jobs that they are not paid for. Rampant issues such as goldfish deaths due to ammonia burns and inadequate resources for small apartment-dwelling pets like ferrets reflect a lack of comprehensive animal care.
It has also been observed that Petco has implemented a rather short-sighted business model, equated to throwing spaghetti at the ceiling in hopes that something would stick. This sales method, in particular, compels employees to push product subscriptions onto customers, which many of us regard as unethical. How are we supposed to push for VCP when it continues to get worse? Most employees at stores have cancelled VCP and have a huge sense of guilt for selling it. As a huge demographic of our customers at above the age of 40, half of them do not even understand how to log in to their app to get their rewards, leaving them to go to Petsmart for a simpler shopping experience. We can’t even blame them half the time.
The impact is not just on us, the employees, but it also damages the trust that our valued customers place in us. Losing regulars because their most helpful employees have to part ways. Furthermore, it's immensely unfair to be held accountable for insufficient sales in high theft areas, an issue that calls into question the company's security measures rather than the hard work of the employees. Higher ups don’t understand that some stores need to be treated like a Ross. We cannot even depend on our carts coming back at the end of the night because they keep getting stolen. 3 people a day run out with carts of dog food and the most you can do is get the plates, but what is there to do when the person doesn’t even have plates on their car? What are we supposed to do when sales drop because of theft?
We ask for a comprehensive reform in the Petco store structure, with a reconsideration of the company's current sales strategy. We seek better treatment for both our colleagues compelled or forced to leave due to misguided corporate decisions, and the animals in our care who deserve optimum conditions for their well-being. Our customers do much better when we truly love our job and they can see it. We care about the animals, and our customers who many of us have built friendships with.
