Demand Special Review for Inmate Incarcerated Since Youth

The Issue

We,the tax paying citizens of Dallas,Tx, stand before you today with a cry for freedom—a plea for justice for Charlton Houston, a man who has endured more than three decades of trauma behind bars. Sentenced to 50 years at the age of 16, Charlton was thrust into a world of violence, isolation, and despair. Now, at 48, he has served over 75% of his sentence, and yet he has been denied parole 11 times. But despite all that he’s faced, Charlton never let the darkness consume him. Physically, he may be inside, but mentally, Charlton has always been outside—refusing to be defined by the prison walls around him.

He has metamorphosed into an exemplary figure, having written seven books that inspire and uplift children and single parents - four of them dedicated exclusively to this purpose.

His profound words and support even from his prolonged confinement have touched lives, filling voids in the hearts of many fatherless children and supporting several single parents, particularly within the African American community in Dallas, Texas. His resourcefulness radiates hope, and his release would undoubtedly bring immense benefit to his community.

Reflecting on the rehabilitative purposes of our justice system, it’s crucial we advocate for fair parole review of his situation. Long-term sentences for childhood offenders are controversial globally, as per Amnesty International's findings. Furthermore, the National Institute of Justice affirms juvenile offenders have the highest potential for change, indicating a high likelihood our loved one could constructively reintegrate into society.

As the Bible teaches us in Ephesians 4:32, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Charlton has paid his debt to society many times over. He has shown through his actions, his education, and his leadership that he deserves the forgiveness and the second chance that we are all called to extend.

Join this plea, seeking a special review of his case and advocating for his potential societal contribution. Let's support second chances and believe in the power of transformation. Sign this petition today.
