Demand South West Water to stop sewage dumping in Tiverton to protect the people and natur
The Issue
People I know keep calling out to me and others, saying they have become ill from swimming in the River Exe. This river, which runs through Tiverton, used to be a cherished place for families and children to enjoy and create lasting memories. Now, it poses a serious health threat due to the frequent sewage dumping carried out by South West Water.
The situation is dire. Both children and adults who swim in areas like the beach by the bridge in the heart of Tiverton, or downstream from Bickleigh Mill, are falling sick. Incredibly, this is occurring without any excessive rainfall – a condition often cited as a reason for sewage overflows. Yet, the company still proceeds with sewage discharge even while enforcing hosepipe bans on residents, citing water shortages.
Westexe residents, in particular, have been enduring foul smells for years. This situation is simply unacceptable and demands immediate action. Tiverton's residents deserve clean and safe waterways, free from pollution and health risks.
We call upon South West Water CEO to take immediate steps to halt sewage dumping into the River Exe. This involves investing in infrastructure to properly manage waste and eliminate the harmful effects on our community. Monitoring and sustainable solutions must be implemented to prevent future occurrences.
The time has come for South West Water to clean up their act and restore the health and safety of our environment. Our community cannot continue to fear the water that should be a resource, not a hazard.
Join us in demanding accountability and action from South West Water. Sign this petition to help us secure a cleaner and healthier future for all Tiverton residents.
Now just days later now we have dead fish and a cat 1 incident for dead fish.
