Demand Sheriff Leppler end the 287(g) partnership with ICE

Demand Sheriff Leppler end the 287(g) partnership with ICE
The Issue
For too long, there has been a sense of fear and insecurity in our community, directly stemming from the ongoing partnership between the Lancaster County Sheriff's Department and ICE through the 287(g) task force model. These collaborations have done more to harm than protect our communities. Sheriff Leppler, it is time to put an end to this partnership for the safety and security of all residents.
The 287(g) program delegates federal immigration enforcement powers to local law enforcement, causing a detrimental overlap that blurs the lines between community policing and immigration enforcement. Such overreach only serves to foster distrust in law enforcement among immigrant communities, making them hesitant to report crimes or cooperate as witnesses, which in turn makes all of us less safe.
Lancaster County is home to a vibrant, diverse community that thrives on inclusivity and mutual respect. Engaging local law enforcement in federal immigration duties not only stretches resources thin but also veers focus away from protecting our community to casting a net of fear over it. Studies have shown that communities which reject ICE partnerships witness increased community engagement and trust, leading to lower crime rates and stronger local bonds.
Additionally, numerous reports highlight instances where ICE, emboldened by such partnerships, has conducted raids and detentions based on racial profiling and without proper warrants, intimidating and unjustly targeting individuals. This is a breach of both trust and justice – core values that any law enforcement agency should uphold above all.
Sheriff Leppler, listen to the voices of Lancaster County who wish to see an end to practices that divide us. Ending the 287(g) cooperation with ICE is a step towards restoring trust and safety, ensuring our community is one where everyone can live without fear.
I urge all community members, neighbors, and allies who believe in just and fair policing to stand with us in this call for change. Let’s unite to create a safer, more trusting Lancaster County for all who call it home. Please sign this petition and help us bring an end to these harmful practices.
