Demand Sensitivity in Titling Mental Health Books

The issue

As a person with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), I am offended and surprised, popular titles such as "Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder" and "Splitting: Protecting Yourself While Divorcing Someone with Borderline Or Narcissistic Personality Disorder". These titles brand those with BPD and other mental health disorders negatively, almost in discriminatory manner. I would have laughed and moved on if these were books about a fictional story or comedy. These books are supposed to aid in understanding, not promote stigma.

To truly comprehend the damage these titles inflict, try replacing the designation of mental health disorders with other sensitive social statuses. "Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Woman You Care About Has Rights" and "Splitting: Protecting Yourself While Divorcing Someone Black." The light it sheds on the harmful stereotypes is alarming.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1.4% of U.S. adults experience BPD in a given year, representing millions of highly stigmatized individuals. Mental health resources are not merely for information but also to provide hope to sufferers, their families, and their friends. Stereotyping in these titles only deters this mission.

We are requesting the current and future authors, publishers, and retailers reconsider these harmful titles for the sake of advocacy and support for mental health. Make titles represent hope, understanding, and unity. Let's work together to create an environment that promotes mental health awareness, not discrimination. Sign this petition to demand sensitivity in mental health book titling.
