The Issue

On December 1st, my little sister fell victim to a preventable tragedy. She was only 34 when a Loudoun County transit commuter bus struck her at the intersection of Croson Lane and Moorefield Blvd, resulting in her untimely death. This heartbreaking incident has left a void in our lives that can never be filled. This tragedy could have been avoided if the intersection were equipped with proper safety measures such as adequate street lighting and crosswalks with flashing lights and cameras. Her life is now a statistic—one that screams for immediate action to prevent future tragedies.

The intersection of Croson Lane and Moorefield Blvd near the Ashburn South Metro station is perilously dark and poses a severe risk to both pedestrians and drivers. Every day, countless individuals traverse this area, including students, commuters, and families. They are exposed to the same risks my sister faced. The lack of visibility and insufficient pedestrian safety measures make this a ticking time bomb. We cannot afford to wait for another family to go through the devastating loss that we have endured.

We call upon Loudoun County authorities to prioritize the installation of safety measures at this intersection immediately. We are demanding:

1. The installation of street lights to improve visibility for both pedestrians and drivers during night-time hours.

2. Flashing light crosswalks equipped with cameras to provide an added layer of protection for pedestrians.

3. A four-way stop sign to regulate traffic flow and ensure all drivers approach the intersection with caution.

4. The implementation of any additional proven safety measures that city engineers and public safety experts deem necessary.

Statistics show that pedestrian accidents are significantly reduced when such safety interventions are implemented. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, illuminated areas have reported a decrease in accidents by up to 50%. Traffic-calming measures like stop signs have been proven effective in reducing traffic speeds and enhancing safety for pedestrians.

Our community cannot afford to bear another preventable loss. Our roads should be safe for everyone—young and old—to navigate without fear. We urge the Loudoun County authorities and all relevant stakeholders to act swiftly.

This is not just about addressing a dangerous intersection but about creating a culture of safety and prevention. Time is of the essence.

Please sign this petition to support the immediate implementation of these critical safety improvements at Croson Lane and Moorefield Blvd. Your signature could save a life.

Concerned Citizens, I am Sylvia Glass, Loudoun County Supervisor for the Broad Run District, which contains the Ashburn Metro Station. I am devastated by the death of Ms. Alyssa Kakol and have been thinking of her family, friends, coworkers, and those who knew her. I know you and the entire community are equally devastated and I appreciate your care. It is important to note that we do not yet know the cause of the accident, as the investigation has not concluded. That being said, there are always opportunities to review improvements that would benefit all those who travel around the Metro station. Safety around the Metro station has long been something my office, the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, and the surrounding Homeowners Associations have been gradually working to address. However, I acknowledge many of the solutions have been slow to construct and difficult to approve, as study policies must be met. That is why I am convening a meeting between stakeholders so that we can all discuss the concerns around the Metro station area. This will include nearby HOAs, the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, the Sheriff’s Office, county and state transportation, General Assembly member staff, among others. I want to again express my deep sadness for the death of Ms. Kakol and thank you again for your desire to improve the safety of your community. Please let me know via my contact information at Loudoun.gov/BroadRun if I can provide any clarification, and I will endeavor to address all requests. I hope you and your family have an enjoyable and safe holiday season. Sincerely, Sylvia

I’m working with Supervisor Glass, in whose district this intersection lies, to see what options we have. My role is to see what can be done through our existing processes. Mike

Thank you for reaching out to the Department of Transportation and Capital Infrastructure (DTCI). We appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns with us. While this incident is under investigation by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, county staff is unable to comment specifically about any of the circumstances surrounding the incident. I can assure you, however, that members of the Board of Supervisors and county staff are closely monitoring for the outcome of the law enforcement investigation, and will engage the Virginia Department of Transportation, which is responsible for the maintenance of the roads in the area of the incident, as well as other entities to determine what action may be appropriate in the near future. Thank you again for your feedback, which will be considered along with input from other residents and our local and state partners.
