Demand RFK Jr. to Retract His Damaging Statements on Autism

Demand RFK Jr. to Retract His Damaging Statements on Autism
The Issue
I am a parent of an amazing and brilliant autistic child. My son, like countless others, is pushing the ceiling of expectations placed on them by societal norms. The characterizations made by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about autistic children recently are not only incorrect but also deeply damaging. His remarks can further a negative stigma against autism, that could genuinely hurt my son's and many others' prospects.
Autism is not a disability to be pitied or looked down upon. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2016, approximately 1 in every 54 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is widening our understanding of the neurodiversity among human populations. Autistic individuals are as talented, capable, and full of potential as any other person. They can and do contribute significantly to society in a variety of fields.
What is harmful are the uninformed and damaging stereotypes, like the ones perpetuated by RFK Jr. Such statements from people in positions of power and influence can perpetuate harmful misconceptions. Autism awareness and acceptance should be promoted, educating people about the potential and capabilities of individuals on the spectrum.
With this petition, we call on Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to not only retract his damaging statements immediately, but also make a public apology. We urge him to utilize his platform to promote acceptance and understanding of autism to replace misconceptions with reality.
