Demand restitution for the massacre of 45, 50-years-old trees in the heart of Mysuru
The Issue
"Observing that the act of cutting a large number of trees was worse than killing a human being, Supreme Court on Tuesday said no mercy should be shown to people who damage the environment and approved imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh for each illegally cut tree." - March 26th 2025.
As a citizen deeply rooted in the beautiful city of Mysuru, I have witnessed with heartbreak the ruthless cutting of 45 majestic trees, each well over 50 years old, all in the name of road widening. It feels as though the heart of Mysuru is being torn out, and the city’s green heritage, that was once our pride, is being destroyed. This unabated urbanization is a threat not only to our natural environment but also to the very essence of Mysuru, which is wrapped in its rich green heritage.
It is therefore imperative that we come together to prevent the unnecessary expansion of Hyder Ali Road, where a crime against nature was committed. We also propose that 50 trees be replanted, protected and nurtured by the MCC and the forest department along this road stretch. A tree planting initiative will not only replace what was lost but also serve as a symbol of our commitment to preserve our city's green heritage.
Moreover, we demand an inquiry by NGT chairman, HON'BLE MR. JUSTICE PRAKASH SHRIVASTAVA, to scrutinize this act and uncover the driving forces behind it. Transparency and accountability are essential to prevent the recurrence of such acts. It is unthinkable that the MCC and the forest department, who are supposed to protect Mysuru's green heritage, could allow this to occur.
Our city's green legacy cannot be allowed to fall into the hands of vested interests. Join us in making our voices heard! Sign this petition to protect the future of Mysuru.
