The Issue

Living in Radford, Virginia, has always been a unique experience, and as students and residents here, seeing our community suffer breaks our hearts. We have witnessed the devastation caused by the severe flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Helene in late September 2024. This flood brought the New River to a crest of 31.03 feet—the highest since 1940— and left a path of destruction through Bisset Park and our beloved neighborhoods. Amidst the chaos, low-income communities bore the brunt, enduring significant property loss, particularly affecting housing units.

While the floodwaters have receded, their impact lingers, not just in damaged buildings but in the lives disrupted, especially among the most vulnerable. Low-income families in Radford require support and resources to rebuild their lives and communities.

This petition urges local authorities to allocate emergency funds specifically targeted at aiding low-income families in Radford who could be affected by climate disasters. We call for access to essential resources such as temporary housing assistance, food, clothing, and healthcare services. It's crucial that these families receive adequate support to not only recover but also prepare for future climate-related challenges.

Getting involved in this cause is more than just rebuilding—it's about protecting and fortifying our community for the future. By coming together, we can ensure that no one is left behind during such crises.

Please sign this petition to demand immediate and sufficient aid for Radford's flood-affected citizens and help prevent future devastation. Together, let's stand strong as a community and create a safer, more resilient Radford for all.
