STUDENTS ARE ON HUNGER STRIKE. WHERE IS THE GOVERNMENT?

For 21 days, Indian students and renowned educationist and activist Sonam Wangchuk have been on a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, Delhi, demanding justice and accountability from the Indian Education Ministry. The issue at hand is the repeated failures and over 70 paper leaks within the educational system in 10 years, which have gravely impacted students’ futures. The protest began due to the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) paper leak, which has not only jeopardised the careers of many aspiring medical students but has also claimed the lives of many such aspirants.

These leaks highlight a significant lapse in the integrity and security of the examination process under the current Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan. Students and protestors are urging the Minister to acknowledge these failures and step down to restore faith in the educational infrastructure of the nation.

The credibility of the education system and citizens' democratic rights are at a critical juncture, and here's why: 

• The government has not engaged in any dialogue with the protesters and has remained silent on the protest that began on the 6th of June, 2026.
• On the 18th of July, Sonam Wangchuk was forcibly taken to the hospital by the Delhi Police disguised as doctors. 
• Peaceful protesters at the site were allegedly beaten up by the Delhi Police.

This movement now is about more than just education and examinations.  It's about safeguarding:

• the right to peacefully dissent
• the right to question power
• the right to be heard
