Demand Renaming of Gracely Park to Reflect Community Values
Demand Renaming of Gracely Park to Reflect Community Values
The Issue
As a local resident, I find it culturally and ethically inappropriate for a serving public servant to have a park named after her. In our society, honors of such magnitude are traditionally awarded posthumously, or to individuals who've made tremendous contributions to community development and societal progress.
Our community deserves a space that carries a name reflecting our shared experience, heritage, and values - not a sitting public servant's. Naming spaces like parks should celebrate our shared history, or honor individuals who've made a significant impact, not current individuals enjoying the powers of office.
An analysis of public spaces across the U.S. shows that less than 10% are named after living individuals, indicating that this decision disrupts a commonly accepted norm ("Naming of Public Spaces," Society for American City Planning). This decision impinges on community sentiment, setting a precedent that undermines the integrity of our public spaces.
We, the residents, request a change. It is time to rename Gracely Park to something that embodies shared community values and honours local or national heroes. The voice of the community should guide this decision, not the whims of a serving public servant. Join us in asserting the true spirit of public spaces and reaffirming democratic standards by signing this petition.
