Demand Removal of LaDuke's Works from Southern Oregon University and Ashland High School
Demand Removal of LaDuke's Works from Southern Oregon University and Ashland High School
The Issue
I am a member of the Ashland community, deeply committed to creating a safe and equitable environment for our youth, families, artists, and activists. I believe in zero tolerance for sexual abuse and the protection of predators. It is with this commitment that I bring to light an issue that has been troubling me.
Winona LaDuke and her family’s works are prominently displayed in both Southern Oregon University (SOU) and Ashland High School (AHS). However, it has come to light that her organization Honor the Earth was found guilty on all counts of sexual harassment and retaliation within its ranks, fined $1.2 million. This revelation is not only shocking but also deeply concerning as it contradicts the values we hold dear in our community.
The presence of the LaDuke's visual works & mural in educational institutions like SOU and AHS indirectly endorses her organization which has been proven to harbor such harmful behavior. This sends a wrong message to our students about what we tolerate as acceptable behavior.
We must remember that educational institutions have a responsibility towards their students - they are supposed to be safe spaces where young minds can grow without fear or intimidation. By continuing to display LaDuke's works, these institutions are failing in their duty towards their students.
Therefore, I urge you all - parents, teachers, students alike - let us demand from SOU and AHS the removal of Winona LaDuke, Betty LaDuke and “SunBear” works from their premises. Let us ensure that we do not endorse individuals or organizations associated with such reprehensible actions. This does not call for the removal of books authored by LaDuke members; a community concern has rightfully been expressed regarding the censorship of reading materials. Rather, the replacement of Winona LaDuke’s image painted on the side of AHS as well as displayed artworks in education spaces.
