The Issue

In recent times, our neighborhoods have seen a significant increase in the installation of Flock Safety cameras by local authorities, under the guise of increasing community security. However, while these cameras are presented as tools to deter crime, they pose a severe threat to the privacy and civil liberties of all residents. It's time we urge the relevant authorities to reconsider their stance on this pervasive surveillance tactic that affects every one of us.

Flock cameras, known for their Automatic License Plate Reading (ALPR) technology, continuously record the movements and activities of residents, often without their knowledge or explicit consent. This form of surveillance can lead to misuse of data, erosion of trust in public institutions, and a chilling effect on free movement and expression. Reports have shown that such technologies disproportionately affect marginalized communities, fostering an environment of discrimination and systemic bias.

Moreover, studies indicate that the efficacy of these cameras in crime prevention is not as robust as claimed, with some research suggesting minimal or no impact on crime rates. This calls into question the justification of employing such invasive surveillance measures in our communities.

Privacy is a fundamental human right, and the indiscriminate collection of personal data without adequate oversight or accountability mechanisms must be addressed immediately. Therefore, we demand that local governments prioritize the protection of citizens' privacy and halt the deployment of Flock Safety cameras in our areas.

We propose that the authorities invest in community-based initiatives that tackle the root causes of crime, such as improved street lighting, community policing, and active neighborhood watch programs, which have a proven track record of enhancing safety without compromising our rights.

Please join us in urging our local government to take action in removing these intrusive cameras and ensuring that the privacy rights of our community are respected and upheld. Sign this petition to make your voice heard and safeguard our community from unwarranted surveillance.
