Demand Remote Practicum Opportunities for Andrews University Online MSW Students

Demand Remote Practicum Opportunities for Andrews University Online MSW Students
The Issue
As online Master of Social Work (MSW) students at Andrews University, we face a unique set of challenges. Unlike our on-campus counterparts, we are required to fulfill practicum requirements that often demand an in-person presence, a stipulation that is both impractical and inequitable for many of us. We juggle work, family responsibilities, financial constraints, and, in some cases, considerable geographic distances. Yet, despite these challenges, we are bound by the same academic and professional standards as traditional students.
The limited availability of remote practicum opportunities in our program represents a significant barrier to our success. This situation highlights an equity and policy gap within social work education and one that disproportionately affects nontraditional learners like us. We, the Students for Equitable Practicum Access (SEPA), require intentional program design, robust institutional support, and comprehensive policy reform to secure field education that is accessible, ethical, and competent.
SEPA's call to action is directed not just at Andrews University but at all institutions with a commitment to advancing social work education. We need a systemic change in how remote practicums are approached and valued. To begin with, universities should prioritize expanding existing partnerships with social service agencies that are open to virtual field placements. Additionally, new partnerships should be cultivated specifically for remote engagements. This can be achieved through targeted outreach and incentivized collaborations that highlight the benefits and feasibility of online practicum arrangements.
Moreover, Andrews University must consider modifying its policies to support students who demonstrate a legitimate need for remote placements due to extraneous circumstances. By implementing a clear, supportive framework, the university can ensure that students like us are not unfairly hindered in our licensing journey.
We call on Andrews University, its MSW program directors, and the larger educational community to recognize and address these barriers proactively. By signing this petition, you are joining a movement towards a more inclusive and realistic approach to social work education. Your support is invaluable in advocating for the necessary policy changes that will enable all students to thrive, regardless of their personal circumstances.
Sign this petition to urge Andrews University to expand remote practicum opportunities for online MSW students and to take concrete steps towards policy reform that reflects the diverse needs of its student body.
