Demand Regular Thursday Opening Hours for Rudgear Park Pickleball Courts

The Issue

I am a resident of Walnut Creek, CA, living less than a football fields distance away from Rudgear park pickleball courts. Like many others in our community, I enjoy playing pickleball with my family at the Rudgear Park courts. However, an arbitrary change has disrupted our routines and enjoyment of this sport.

The courts are now inexplicably closed all day on Thursdays. This closure forces my family to either not play at all, organize expensive ride shares to get to play (when the other spouse has the car), or to commute over an hour... Yet there are vacant courts right across the street from my house that remain unused due to this unnecessary closure.

Pickleball is not just a game; it's an essential part of our community's social fabric and contributes positively to physical health and mental well-being. According to the USA Pickleball Association, regular play can improve cardiovascular fitness and balance while fostering social connections (USA Pickleball Association).

For me personally, it has helped me overcome depression and lose weight.

We call upon the city authorities of Walnut Creek, CA, to reconsider this decision and keep the Rudgear park pickleball courts open on Thursdays from 8AM - 1PM. This will reduce local traffic, keep kids off devices and video games, and burn an extra estimated 1.5 million calories/year from Walnut Creek residents.

Please sign this petition if you believe in promoting healthy recreational activities within our community by ensuring fair access for all residents.
