Demand Reform of the Juvenile Justice System, Stop Trying Minors as Adults
The Issue
I was only a minor when I experienced the deep-seated flaws of the American juvenile justice system. A system that claimed to rehabilitate instead delivered trauma. Today, almost two decades afterward, I bear the scars—haunting remnants of a time when I, still a child, was prosecuted as an adult. I write this request not just for myself, but on behalf of all the youth who are being treated as adults by a system that is supposed to protect them.
In the United States, on any given day, nearly 5000 juveniles are incarcerated in adult prisons. This is a staggering number, indicative of a systemic failure to respect the developmental differences between children and adults. While it is unarguable that young people must bear responsibility for their actions, the manner in which our system pursues this objective is often detrimental to their rehabilitation and their long-term wellbeing.
We cannot allow our system to shroud adolescents in a harsh environment that subjects them to trauma, hardship and neglect, often exacerbating the very behaviors the system aims to reform. Instead, we should be focusing our resource on preventive measures, effective rehabilitation, and support mechanisms that prioritize their growth and wellness over punitive action.
We urgently need to bring awareness to this issue and demand a reform in the way the juvenile justice system operates. This petition is a plea to lawmakers, enforcers and society at large, to acknowledge the magnitude of this problem and aim for an empathetic and constructive approach towards juvenile offenders. It's no longer about my past, but about preventing futures like mine.
Let's secure a system that values our children, their maturity and their potential for change. Sign this petition and stand together against trying minors as adults. Let's fix a system that is broken and invest in the potential of our future generations. Let’s create a system that does not try children for mistakes that they are unable to comprehend as to why they are making them in the first place. We need a system that does not try children as adults or children but a system that will try them in a way that will intervene youth when they make mistakes will Help them correct their mistakes and will help them in the end have potential at a bright future!
