The Issue

My brother recently endured a traumatic experience while incarcerated in a Maryland prison. He was brutally stabbed in his face and neck and had to be flown to shock trauma. Alarmingly, his family was not informed of this horrific incident, AT ALL. This is just one example of the many failures within this system that urgently require our attention and action.

Inmates like my brother are subjected to inappropriate living conditions which include backed-up plumbing that overflows, ruining personal belongings. They often lack access to basic necessities like hot water and heat during the bitter winters. Food trays meant to sustain them are left out for over an hour, resulting in cold and unsanitary meals that barely meet nutritional guidelines, if at all. The lack of immediate and proper medical care during emergencies is another distressing issue; some inmates wait hours before receiving necessary medical attention, exacerbating their health conditions.

The prison system in Maryland is in dire need of reform. Correctional officers must receive proper training to handle medical emergencies effectively and promptly. It is crucial to ensure all facilities have reliable infrastructure with functioning plumbing and heating systems. A re-evaluation of meal preparation processes is needed to guarantee that inmates receive wholesome and nutritious meals. These are not excessive demands; they are basic rights that every human deserves, regardless of their circumstances.

Reforming the Maryland prison system is not only about addressing these immediate issues but also about acknowledging the humanity of those behind bars. By doing so, we can create an environment that fosters rehabilitation rather than perpetuates suffering.

I call upon the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services to take immediate action. It's time to implement substantial changes to guarantee all inmates are treated with dignity and respect, ensuring their basic needs are met comprehensively.

Please sign this petition to raise awareness and push for the necessary reforms needed in Maryland's prison system. Your signature can contribute to a meaningful change in the lives of many who need it the most.
