As a person of color, I have grown up with the magic and joy that Nintendo brings to millions of lives worldwide. However, there is a glaring issue that needs addressing - the lack of racial representation in the Mushroom Kingdom. Despite being a global phenomenon enjoyed by people from diverse backgrounds, there has never been a character of color in the Mario universe. The recent casting of Keegan Michael Key as Toad does not suffice as he voices a mushroom character.

Moreover, characters like Princess Daisy and Jimmy T have inexplicably transitioned from tan to white over time. This lack of diversity sends an unfortunate message about inclusivity to players around the world.

According to Statista (2020), 58% of U.S gamers are non-white individuals who deserve representation in one of gaming's most iconic franchises. We urge Nintendo to recognize this disparity and take steps towards creating more racially diverse characters within their games.

We believe that everyone should see themselves represented on screen, regardless of their race or ethnicity. It's time for Nintendo to reflect its global audience within its game worlds too.
