Demand Quality Public Education in Illinois

Demand Quality Public Education in Illinois

The Issue

IF ONE MILLION VOICES CAN RISE UP TO TELL SOMEONE TO NAME THEIR BABY MEGATRON, THEN ONE MILLION VOICES CAN RISE UP TO DEMAND QUALITY EDUCATION IN ILLINOIS!

Legislators in Springfield have a constitutional obligation to provide access to quality education for all citizens.  It has been pointed out repeatedly to the courts that the legislators are failing, in large part because of insufficient funding.

Under the current funding scheme, 81% of school districts are funded at the bare minimum per-student level.  Property taxes have to be raised to extremely high rates to accomplish this in neighborhoods with low property value. The wealthiest school districts outspend per student by almost 4 times the minimum, often with lower property tax rates.  It is no surprise that students from well funded schools receive a high quality education.  What should be beyond surprise - what should be utterly shocking and unacceptable - is how poor the quality of education is in schools funded at just the minimum level.

The only reasonable conclusion is that the minimum per student funding level for school districts is TOO LOW.  The legislature's failure to find funds in the budget to bring this level up is a failure to uphold the constitution of the state, and this should NEVER be acceptable, under any fiscal or economc circumstances. The supreme court refuses to demand that legislators change their ways, despite the fact that courts have repeatedly found that they are violating the constitution.

Only the people of Illinois, with the support of the American community at large, can demand the change we need. Only the legislature can bring it, and they never will without a mandate from the people!
