Demand Public Support Against the Predatory Monetization of League of Legends Skins

The Issue

Background:
League of Legends, arguably the most popular online multiplayer game of our generation cherised by millions of players worldwide. However, in recent months and following a global financial crisis the game's approach to how in-game purchases are made for specific items has shown a surge in "Gacha-fication" of skins and the exposure to exploitative gambling mechanisms have left us deeply concerned.

The Issues:
In the quest for profit, Riot Games has taken the route of "Gacha-fication," a term used to describe the incorporation of a gacha-style gambling mechanism into their in-game cosmetic purchases. This practice preys on the excitement of chance, turning what should be a wholesome gaming experience into a potentially harmful one for vunurable players including their younger playerbase.

Our Concerns

  • Exploitative Exposure to Gambling - The existence of loot-box style systems in League of Legends where players can only access limited time exclusive content through these loot boxes creates a dangerous association between gaming and gambling. Young and impressionable players are exposed to these mechanics, which can lead to further consiquences.
  • Incompatibility with Teen ESRB Rating - The gacha-fication of skins has raised significant concerns about the game's suitability for a Teen ESRB Rated audience. Such monetization practices can introduce children to gambling, which is inappropriate for a game with a younger player base.

Our Demands

  • Reform the Monetization Practices - Implement a fairer, more transparent system for acquiring in-game skins, ensuring that players know exactly what they are purchasing without the element of chance or exclusivity through gambling-like store mechanics.
  • Remove Gacha-Style Gambling - Eliminate the loot box mechanisms where players would not otherwise be able to purchase the item in the store for a direct amount of RP, or be able to earn the item through other non-exploitative means such as an event pass.

Why this Matters:

The impact of exploitative monetization practices extends beyond the confines of the gaming world. It has real-world consequences on the financial and mental well-being of players, particularly younger ones. We must protect our community and promote ethical practices within the gaming industry.
