The Issue

The safety of our communities and children in Canada is under threat, due to the lack of public access to the National Sex Offender Registry (NSOR). Currently, only Canadian law enforcement agencies can access the NSOR to assist in preventing and investigating sexual crimes. This system, however, prevents us, the ordinary citizens, from obtaining vital information about the individuals who pose a risk to our peaceful communities. And worryingly, we are kept in the dark about sex offenders living nearby.

A study by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics reveals there were more than 30,000 police-reported sexual assaults in Canada in 2019. Despite the high numbers, we are unable to access the NSOR to keep our loved ones safe. For the families across Canada, this has become an issue that is deeply personal. Our ability to protect the innocent is hampered by the limited access to crucial information about registered sex offenders in our vicinity.

We are requesting that the Canadian Government ensures the NSOR becomes publicly accessible to all residents. Such a step would allow us to stay informed about those who reside in our neighborhoods and to take the necessary precautions to safeguard ourselves and our children. For us, this petition is more than just a plea; it is a call to necessary action in securing a safer and more assured future for everyone living in Canada. We implore all those concerned about our safety and that of our children to sign this petition and voice your support for this much-needed change.
