Demand Proper Responsibility from CRE and CA at Gallaudet University

The Issue

My roommate and I are students at Gallaudet University and feel let down by the actions of both the Campus Residence Education (CRE) and Community Advocates (CA). Late one night, while we were doing our homework, the fire alarm was pulled off. In the ensuing panic, my roommate, who lives with a serious medical condition, experienced a debilitating episode. The CRE and CA decided to play UNO card games in the building while all of us stayed outside for an hour. Rather than pursuing the matter with the urgency it deserved, the CRE and CA opted for inaction, asking us to figure out who was responsible for pulling the alarm. We were utterly disheartened.

It is essential to note that our university is equipped with CCTV, a simple, reliable solution that would resolve such an issue promptly and accurately. In 2017, The National Center for Education Statistics showed that about 81% of public schools use security cameras to monitor their buildings, suggesting that Gallaudet University too should rely on technology at its disposal instead of burdening its students.

The incompetence displayed by CRE and CA not only disrupted our academic lives but put my roommate's health in serious jeopardy. We insist that Gallaudet University holds CRE and CA accountable for carrying out their duties in maintaining a safe, conducive environment for all its students. We implore fellow students, faculty, parents, and those who care about student welfare to join us in demanding this change. Please sign our petition.
