The Issue

Tuesday evening turned into a terrifying experience for many residents in Niagara Falls when multiple aggressive dogs were reported running loose in a busy area. These events led to the tragic shooting of one dog by police, which raises urgent questions about the current protocols in handling such situations.  https://www.niagarapolice.ca/news/posts/aggressive-dog-shot-and-killed-by-nrps-officer-niagara-falls/

The distressing incident began when the Niagara Regional Police Service received numerous 911 calls about three large dogs wreaking havoc at the intersection of Thorold Stone Road and Kalar Road around 5:30 PM. These dogs were not only disrupting traffic but also chasing pedestrians, posing a serious threat to public safety. However, what unfolded next was both unexpected and disconcerting. While two of the dogs were safely captured and returned to their families, the third was shot and killed by police.  This shooting was a premeditated act.  Most police officers do not carry hunting rifles, but in this case, a police officer who was more heavily armed was called in to execute the dog with a hunting rifle.  It begs the question, why weren’t the Niagara Humane Society asked to tranquilize the dog while the police managed the traffic and the crowds?  The Humane Society has moved animals safely out of road traffic before, without violence.

This inconsistency in handling the dogs prompts a call for police reform. Why was the decision made to internationally shoot one dog dead when the others were captured without harm?  We, the community, are deeply concerned by the aggressive use of force, especially considering alternative methods could have been taken. The current approach, which resulted in the death of an animal, is not only tragic but underscores the need for reevaluating police procedures in handling animal-related incidents.

Police officers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of all members of the community, including animals. We believe that with proper training, non-lethal strategies can be effectively employed to manage situations involving animals, thereby protecting them and maintaining public safety. Residents of Grimsby are calling for comprehensive police reform to implement standardized protocols that prioritize the safe capture and protection of animals.

The time has come to take decisive action against unnecessary violence.  Join us in urging the Niagara Regional Police Service to revise their policies and implement humane tactics in dealing with animal incidents. Sign this petition to demand meaningful police reform to prevent future tragedies.
