Demand police accountability and transparency

Demand police accountability and transparency
The Issue
It was an ordinary night when, over a mere suspicion of driving, we were pulled over by an unmarked police SUV. The darkness was thick, hiding any possible identification from the vehicle. As we stopped, complying with the officer's orders, what should have been a routine check spiraled into a nightmarish ordeal.
I respectfully asked for the officer's name and badge number more than 15 times, but my requests were met with stubborn silence. You see, every citizen has the right to know the identity of law enforcement officers, especially in situations where their authority is being exercised. Despite providing my ID, the officer was unsatisfied. Upon merely trying to glance at his badge, he violently slammed me against the car, causing intense pain. His response to my cries for help was chilling indifference, followed by excessive force, including beating, tasing, and punching, while disregarding my humanity.
This traumatic encounter highlighted a glaring issue in the conduct of some officers—a lack of accountability and transparency. Many individuals in jurisdictions where officers refuse to identify themselves suffer similar fates. It is unacceptable that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has its hands tied without proper identification details of rogue officers, thereby allowing misconduct to go unchecked.
Canada, known for its justice system, must not allow such injustice to breed in its streets. We need a reform in police accountability. When police lights are activated to pull someone over, the event should be clearly captured on a system that officers cannot access or alter. This ensures that any unwarranted behavior is recorded and can be independently reviewed by oversight bodies.
We demand an enforceable policy requiring officers to display their badge number and name prominently at all times. This identification should be logged and verifiable for any engagement. Furthermore, real-time recording of police stops, uploaded instantly to a tamper-proof system, will safeguard citizens' rights and police legitimacy.
By signing this petition, you call upon our government and police departments to implement these changes. Stand with us in bringing transparency, protection, and accountability to law enforcement. Let's make it safe for every citizen to know and trust the name behind the badge well in the holding cells of Hanover police station officers abused my rights by threatening to tease me for not giving my fingerprints which is against their protocol we need a system to hold them accountable for this
