The Issue

On September 8, 2025, Nepal experienced widespread and tragic unrest following the government's decision to ban over 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube. The ban was implemented under new communication laws, citing the platforms' failure to register and pay local taxes. However, this move was perceived by many as a direct attack on freedom of expression and a means to suppress dissent.

The government's action sparked massive protests across the country, particularly among the youth, who have been actively using these platforms to voice their concerns about corruption, lack of accountability, and economic challenges. The demonstrations quickly escalated into broader anti-government protests, with participants demanding greater transparency, justice, and the restoration of democratic freedoms.

The response from security forces was swift and severe. Reports indicate that at least 19 individuals were killed, and over 100 others were injured during the protests. Security forces employed live ammunition, rubber bullets, and tear gas to disperse crowds, leading to widespread fear and chaos. In some areas, curfews were imposed, and the army was deployed to maintain order.

This tragic incident has highlighted deep-seated issues within Nepal's political system, including widespread corruption, lack of accountability, and a growing disconnect between the government and the people. The excessive use of force against peaceful protesters has raised serious concerns about human rights and the state of democracy in Nepal.

In response to the public outcry, Nepal's Home Minister, Ramesh Lekhak, resigned, citing moral responsibility. Despite this, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli defended the crackdown, citing national sovereignty. International observers and rights groups have condemned the restrictions and excessive force, urging the government to listen to the public and address corruption.

This petition seeks to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis in Nepal and to call for immediate action to restore peace, uphold human rights, and ensure that the voices of the people are heard and respected
