The Issue

I am a Registered Psychotherapist specializing in treating women who experience pregnancy loss. Sadly, I have experienced the heartache of miscarriage myself, losing seven babies without any support. Going through such a deeply personal and devastating event is further compounded by the lack of institutional support, as there is no provision for paid leave for miscarriage in Canada.

Pregnancy loss is an incredibly emotional and physical process. It requires time for recovery, reflection, and healing. Yet, hundreds of thousands of women and families across Canada are forced to return to their daily responsibilities almost immediately, often because they can't afford to take unpaid leave. For many, this means going back to work while still grieving, without the time needed to begin the healing process.

The absence of a national policy for paid leave during such a traumatic event leaves many women and families feeling unsupported and isolated. Studies show that approximately 15-20% of all pregnancies result in miscarriage. This translates to thousands of women and families suffering every year without the aid they desperately need.

In contrast, other countries like New Zealand have already paved the way by acknowledging the need for paid leave following a miscarriage, recognizing it as a crucial aspect of not only recovery but also of mental health support. During a time when the focus should be on healing and recovery, women should not be burdened with financial stress and job insecurity.

By enacting a policy that provides paid leave for miscarriage, the Canadian government would be recognizing the physical and emotional toll of pregnancy loss. It would also be an affirmation of support and empathy for families during their time of need.

We call upon lawmakers and government officials to introduce and pass legislation that mandates paid leave following a miscarriage. It’s time for Canada to lead with compassion and understanding. Please sign this petition to help ensure that families suffering the loss of a pregnancy can focus on healing rather than financial stress. Together, we can advocate for a caring and supportive stance on this crucial issue.
