Demand Open Market Competition for Internet Service in Our Area

Demand Open Market Competition for Internet Service in Our Area
The Issue
I am a local resident, persistently dealing with skyrocketing internet charges by Optimum, the solo internet service provider in our community. Pervasive monopoly conditions have left us hostage to their arbitrary rates. The high cost of internet service is disproportionately burdening our everyday lives, making it a challenge to access essential digital services and remote work or learning. I'm calling for change.
Currently, Optimum is the only provider in our vicinity, enjoying unchecked power to set prices well above a reasonable amount. This lack of competition curbs innovation and restricts consumer choice, contrary to the principles of a free-market economy. We need an open market where new internet service providers can introduce faster, reliable, and affordable fibre-optic internet services.
Incorporating additional ISPs increases competitive pressure, thereby driving technical improvements and lowering costs. It has been observed elsewhere that when a region goes from having one to two broadband providers, prices can drop by as much as 15% (Source: Consumer Reports, 2018). Bringing fibre-optic internet services into our area is vital for our connectivity, business growth, and overall quality of life.
Let's join together to demand from our local government and industry regulators the allowance for more internet service providers to enter our area, fostering competition, and addressing this ongoing issue. A healthier broadband market benefits everyone. Your signature can make a difference in our mission to bring affordable internet to our community. Please sign this petition.
