The Issue

The City of Peterborough is in urgent need of a concurrent disorder inpatient facility that is covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). With mental health and substance use disorders often co-occurring, having a dedicated facility can make a crucial difference in recovery outcomes for many individuals. These disorders require integrated treatment approaches that cater to both mental health and addiction problems simultaneously.

Currently, individuals in Peterborough suffering from concurrent disorders often have no choice but to seek help outside their community, which can be both costly and isolating. This further complicates the healing process, alienating them from their local support systems and increasing travel costs. It's imperative that we provide accessible local solutions, so that individuals receive the care they need without undue financial burden.

Statistics from the Canadian Mental Health Association highlight that one in five Canadians experience a mental health or addiction problem annually, and it's not an issue that can be ignored. A dedicated facility would not only alleviate some of the burdens on local hospitals but would also allow for more specialized care.

A collaborative effort between the City of Peterborough, the Government of Ontario, and the Government of Canada can bring this facility to fruition. It's a crucial step toward providing proper healthcare solutions that meet the needs of our residents and ensure equitable access to care.

Please join us in advocating for this important cause. Sign the petition and help us secure the necessary resources and support to make this much-needed facility a reality.
