Demand NS Judges to Take Sexual Assault Cases More Seriously

The Issue

Nicole Ashley MacLeod, 36, of Murray Siding, Colchester County, was arraigned in Truro provincial court Sept. 4 on 10 charges: two counts each of sexual assault, sexual interference, sexual exploitation and making sexually explicit material available to a child, and single counts of child luring and invitation to sexual touching.

On Aug. 31, MacLeod was arrested and charged with violating a condition of a June undertaking to police that prohibited her from communicating with the complainants. She spent three nights in custody before she got bail Sept. 4.

On November 12, Colchester County District RCMP received information that Nicole MacLeod, who was charged in June with sexual offences, breached conditions of her release again by contacting a youth victim.
On November 16, she was arrested and remanded into custody. MacLeod was charged with breach of release order and appeared in Truro Provincial Court on November 20 at which time she was released again.

We need our justice system, especially our judges, to regard sexual assault cases with the utmost urgency they deserve.

The NS Courts continue to fail to provide justice for victims and encourage a culture of impunity among perpetrators.

Our judges must understand the severity of their responsibility and the impact of their verdicts on the lives of victims. It is a matter not only of justice but of public safety.

We look to our legal system to protect us, let us ensure it does what it's supposed to.

Sign this petition now to demand NS judges reevaluate their handling of sexual assault cases.
