Demand North Allegheny School District to Reinstate Old WiFi System
The Issue
As students of North Allegheny School District, we find ourselves in a concerning predicament that has greatly hampered our educational experience and overall growth. The recent overhaul of our school's wifi system comprised the removal of access to certain crucial websites and a restriction on the system's capabilities that have detrimentally impacted our learning process.
For instance, many students fail to achieve academic potential due to the lack of reliable resources for assistance. Even worse, students are unable to do research, and access quality sources for their academic pursuits, not only in the classroom, but also in out of school clubs such as Speech and debate, science fair, hosa, DECA, Computer club, AI club, TSA, physics bowl, math bowl, science bowl, anatomy club, digital art art & computer vision club, NHS, and more, overall hindering performance and productivity to slow speeds. Organizations like speech and debate have noted, “The WiFi is hampering North Allegheny’s debate team, ranked #1 in the state, and jeapordizing the possibility of success at their upcoming state championships”, and countless other student and organization criticism has been expressed.
Moreover, fellow athletes can't get updates about sports - because Instagram, a crucial platform that was much relied upon for these updates, is inaccessible. Overall, students are finding it harder to do assignments, and utilize internet resources to enhance their learning experience. Instead, our school faces second-rate education, devastatingly separating North Allegheny's track record of success.
Our experiences reflect a wider trend within our school, with anecdotes of students unhappy with the educational limitations enforced by the ban of educational websites, the inability to network through LinkedIn (the industry standard for networking and job/internship applications, crucial for the future of our nation), and notably, a limitation on search results. This severe and unwarranted internet censorship hinders us from accessing diverse and informed sources, affecting the whole spectrum of our educational endeavors—from research work to peer-group collaborations.
We're not asking for unrestricted internet access that allows inappropriate behavior, rather we are advocating for a balanced approach that would not impede our learning experience. As such, we call on the North Allegheny School District to rethink its approach and reinstate the old wifi system promptly. The education and future of students must not be compromised. We urge everyone who believes in the cause of unbiased and uninhibited education to sign and share this petition, in hopes that NA makes a change.
