The Issue

The Issue

Boston Public Schools feed thousands of students every day—but right now, most students only have one lunch option per day. If you don’t like it, there’s no choice, and many students end up skipping meals or going hungry.

We surveyed over 150 students, and the message was clear: students want a say in what they eat—and more choices every day.

Choice isn’t just a preference—it’s about ensuring students actually eat and get the nutrition they need to focus and learn. When students have options, they’re more likely to enjoy lunch, reduce food waste, and stay energized for school.

What We’re Calling For

We’re calling on Boston Public Schools to:

  • Give students a voice in menu planning through surveys or student councils
  • Offer multiple lunch options each day, so students can pick what works for them
  • Allow mix-and-match meals to accommodate tastes, dietary needs, and cultural preferences

Why It Matters

Food is fuel. If students aren’t eating, they’re not learning. It’s that simple. For too long, student voices have been left out of decisions about school meals. It’s time to change that. Students shouldn’t be forced to eat something they don’t like—or go hungry—just because there’s only one option. Expanding choice ensures everyone gets the nutrition they need while respecting their preferences.

Take Action
