Demand Monroe County to Reconsider Approval of an Encampment

Demand Monroe County to Reconsider Approval of an Encampment
The Issue
I am a concerned citizen of Monroe County, deeply affected by the boro's decision to approve an encampment. While the action may have been intended to address a social issue, it risks decreasing safety and quality of life for all residents, me included. There is a pressing need for a rethink of this strategy.
We acknowledge the need to support displaced individuals, but the current solution only serves to move the issue elsewhere This approach is flawed, considering the numerous vacant buildings within the boro. Repurposing these structures could provide a more secure environment for everyone involved.
Apart from security, these ill-thought arrangements have huge potential to harm local businesses and property prices. According to a study from the University of California, Berkeley, the presence of homeless encampments can potentially decrease local property values by up to 13%. Additionally, a research by Safe Seattle highlighted that more than 70% of businesses in areas with homeless encampments reported a drop in trade due to safety concerns.
This is not to marginalize the homeless or their plight. In fact, research from the National Alliance to End Homelessness states that stable housing improves job prospects and mental health outcomes for displaced individuals. This is why we must pressure the boro to utilize existing buildings for those in need, instead of outdoor encampments.
We urge Stroudsburg Boro to reassess its decision and explore safer, more substantive alternatives. Help us preserve the safety and contribute to a more compassionate solution for those affected by homelessness. Sign this petition to make our voices heard.
