Demand McDonald's to Offer Gluten-Free Buns in the United States
The Issue
I have been living a gluten-free lifestyle since high school. Like many others, I am part of a growing community of people in the United States who are gluten intolerant, have Celiac disease, or choose to live gluten free. Our dietary choices or needs should not limit our access to convenient and enjoyable dining options. Yet, one of the largest fast-food chains in our country, McDonald's, does not offer us any options for gluten-free buns.
It is disappointing that despite being a significant part of the population - with an estimated 1% of Americans diagnosed with Celiac disease (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases) and many more choosing a gluten-free diet for other health reasons - we are overlooked by such major food providers.
McDonald's has shown flexibility and adaptability in their menu before; they have introduced healthier options like salads, apple slices, and even oatmeal. It is time they extend this inclusivity towards those who require or prefer gluten-free alternatives as well.
By offering gluten-free buns, McDonald’s can make their meals accessible to all individuals regardless of dietary restrictions or preferences. This change will not only benefit those living a gluten free lifestyle but also position McDonald’s as an inclusive fast-food chain that caters to diverse customer needs.
