The Issue

What happened on West Bank Street in Athens, Tennessee is heartbreaking—and deeply disturbing. On September 9, police responded to reports of animal abuse and found aggressive, malnourished dogs running loose, along with more dogs locked inside a home in unsanitary conditions. Seven living dogs were seized and brought to safety. But even more horrifying: the man charged in the case admitted to letting a mother dog and six puppies starve to death earlier this year.

This is not a misunderstanding or an isolated mistake. It's a pattern of deliberate neglect and cruelty—one that resulted in immense suffering and the preventable deaths of innocent animals. And yet too often, cases like this are met with leniency in the courts, allowing abusers to walk away with probation or minor penalties.

We’re calling on McMinn County District Attorney Russell Johnson and any judge presiding over this case to pursue and apply the maximum sentence allowed under Tennessee law for aggravated animal cruelty.

Letting this case quietly disappear into a plea deal or low-level conviction sends the message that animals’ lives—and the public's safety—don’t matter. In this case, the suspect not only let animals die in his care, but also allegedly threatened to shoot responding officers, resulting in additional criminal charges. This is about protecting animals and communities from repeat offenders.

The people of Athens, and the many Tennesseans who care deeply about animal welfare, are watching. We believe justice means ensuring that abuse has real consequences—and that those who commit it are not allowed to do so again.

Please sign and share this petition to help send a clear message: animal cruelty will not be tolerated in McMinn County.
