Demand local sourcing and clear labeling of fresh food in Missouri
The Issue
Growing up in Missouri, I have always treasured the deep connection we share with our land and the local communities that work tirelessly to provide for us. There's something incredibly rewarding about knowing exactly where your food comes from, about trusting that it hasn't traveled halfway across the world to reach your table. In Missouri, we have a unique opportunity to strengthen these connections by prioritizing local and U.S.-sourced food in our stores.
I am calling for changes to ensure that all fresh produce and meat sold in Missouri originates from trusted U.S.-based sources. This initiative is vital for both our health and the economic stability of local farmers who contribute to our community's prosperity. Furthermore, for imports that do find their way to our shelves, I urge for large, easy-to-read signage so that all shoppers, including our elderly, can make informed decisions.
Additionally, I believe it's imperative to allow individuals the right to sell some of their own surplus produce directly to neighbors without the burden of heavy regulations or taxes. Why should a local with excess tomatoes pay the USDA for the privilege to share with a neighbor? There is wisdom in letting these transactions occur freely and openly, fostering community self-reliance and sustainability.
This proposal not only honors Missouri's rich agricultural heritage but also fortifies our self-sufficiency in times of global uncertainty. The ability to source safe, fresh, and local food is a matter of urgency for the health and security of our people.
Help us reassert control over our community's food by signing this petition. Let's advocate for strong legislative measures that support our farmers, protect our rights, and empower our choices at the supermarket. Together, we can pave the way for a healthier and more resilient Missouri.
