I am personally addressing this issue because I am aware of a situation involving a young 14-year-old schoolgirl victimized by an offender who has yet to face justice. This person I know has caused irrevocable harm, encompassing not only physical effects but also deep emotional and psychological traumas. The inability of our judicial system to act decisively and permanently to protect its citizens is unacceptable. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, roughly 68% of released prisoners were arrested for a new crime within three years, and 83% within nine years (BJS, 2018). Society must not be a platform for reoffences. It is a serious concern that questions the effectiveness of our justice system. Therefore, we are calling on the legal and judicial systems to hold serious criminal offenders accountable for their atrocities by imposing and enforcing life imprisonment as a penalty. By signing this petition, we demand a safer society, a more effective justice system, and most importantly, proper justice served for victims like the aforementioned schoolgirl.
