Demand LG&E/KU Eliminate the Unfair Fee for Opting out of Smart/Advanced Meters
The Issue
Yesterday, I received a letter stating I would now have to part with an extra $12 each month - that's a whopping $144 annually - for the “privilege” of using my existing utility meter. For many of us, this is exorbitant and unjust.
Now, as loyal customers, we are being practically punished for refusing the installation of smart/advanced meters - a decision we've made due to a multitude of well-documented health, safety, and privacy concerns.
Studies have shown potential health risks associated with wireless RF emissions from smart meters and their panoply of reports on associated safety and privacy controversies. Additionally, for many of us, these smart meters are installed within a few feet of where we sleep.
Consequently, I, and numerous individuals like me, choose to stick to my existing meter to prevent avoidable risk. However, LG&E/KU’s decision to impose a forceful fee on their customers for a personal choice stands contrary to consumer rights.
LG&E/KU might argue that smart meters can bring cost-efficiency along with them. It remains to be seen if those savings will ever reach the consumer. But in the meantime, choice and consent are two huge components of a customer-centric company, and imposing a fee for not using the service they want us to use crosses ethical boundaries.
Today, it’s $12 a month, but who even knows what LG&E/KU might charge us tomorrow? Therefore, we urge LG&E/KU to remove these penalties and create a policy that respects customer choice. And, while they're at it, acknowledge the concerns of those who opt-out of smart/advanced meters and build strategies that cater to a wider demographic without adding unnecessary financial strains.
