Demand Language Accessibility for Foreign Workers in Alberta!

Demand Language Accessibility for Foreign Workers in Alberta!
The Issue
Thousands of temporary foreign workers come to Alberta each year in search of better opportunities. These individuals are essential to our economy, yet they face systemic barriers that leave them vulnerable, the most critical of which is language inaccessibility.
We, concerned citizens of Alberta, are calling on the Government of Alberta to take immediate action to provide foreign workers with the language support they urgently need to understand and assert their rights.
The Problem:
Foreign workers face serious risks because they often cannot access information in their native languages. Language barriers impact:
- Workplace safety — most Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training is in English only
- Housing access
- Healthcare services
- Understanding of rights and protections
- Pathways to permanent residency
According to a Canadian Council for Refugees report, 73% of organizations working with migrant workers say language barriers are the single greatest challenge these workers face.
We Demand Action:
We urge the Government of Alberta to:
- Provide application materials and workers’ rights documents in multiple languages
- Fund translation and interpretation services to ensure every worker can access critical information
- Deliver OHS training and safety resources in multiple languages to reduce workplace injuries and fatalities
- Recognize language access as a basic and essential right for all workers
Alberta’s industries, including food manufacturing, agriculture, and meat-packing, rely on migrant labour. These jobs are often “3D” (Dirty, Dangerous, and Difficult), and language inaccessibility puts workers at further risk.
This is about safety, fairness, and dignity.
Accessibility is a fundamental right. No one should be placed in harm’s way because they don’t speak English. Temporary foreign workers deserve to understand their rights and live with confidence and security. These language resources will empower foreign workers to navigate their employment, workplace safety, and immigration processes with confidence.
We appeal to everyone to stand with us. Please sign our petition to support improved language accessibility for foreign workers' rights.
Join us in calling for equity and accountability. Sign this petition and help us pressure the Alberta government to make language accessibility a priority for all workers.
