We, the bedside Nurses at Kaiser Antioch, have composed this letter to express our dissatisfaction with the current Adult Services Director, Lilly Brown. We have personally seen a recurring pattern of poor management and a risky approach to patient and staff care. Her actions have included: repeatedly disregarding the professional judgment of RNs, failing to build confidence among the nursing staff, not accounting for patient acuity which puts patients at risk, and pushing nurses out instead of retaining them. This has led to an environment that is detrimental to both staff morale and patient care.

 

Including, but not limited to these reasons:

 

·       Implementing waivers to satisfy poor planning/budgeting

·       Not following granted waivers correctly, which increases safety risks for patients and staff.

·       Denying sitters for aggressive patients even though MD has ordered one.

·       Failing to educate and communicate with staff of changes in patient population/level of care

·       Threatening staff after they raised safety concerns or call safety stops

·       Continuing said unsafe practices with no resolutions

·       Micromanaging from an office and not rounding to make sound decisions

·       Inability/unwillingness to work together to resolve issues in the departments.

·       Antioch Medical Center has the 2nd highest staff injury rate related to patient handling, which can be directly related to Lilly’s refusal to provide a comprehensive annual safe patient handling refresher class.

·       During Covid she was instrumental in the denial of PPE to the staff with the directive to keep it locked up.

·       Ignored repeated called from nurses to place violent patient as a 1:1 and  security hold resulting in violent physical harm of multiple nurse, PCT, and mental professional.

 

The time is now for change in leadership at Kaiser Antioch. We urge you all who care about safe and quality healthcare in Antioch, CA to join us in demanding that Kaiser appoints an effective and competent Director of Adult Services, who can lead with empathy and respect towards both staff members and patients alike.
