Demand justice for Yavuz Durmaz
The Issue
Turkish
My childhood friend, 17-year-old Yavuz Durmaz, was tragically shot and killed on a seemingly ordinary Friday night in Sayreville, New Jersey, by a 16-year-old individual. Yavuz had no involvement in the incident or in any conflict. The shock and indescribable pain experienced by his family and loved ones in the aftermath of this senseless act are beyond words. Losing Yavuz at such a young age has deeply shaken our entire community, leaving us grappling with a profound sense of loss and injustice.
Nothing can bring Yavuz back. However, we still have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to ensure that justice is served. The 16-year-old responsible for Yavuz’s death must be charged with murder and, most importantly, tried as an adult for this brutal crime. The fact that Yavuz was taken from us just one year before adulthood makes this loss even more devastating. It is vital that the legal system sends a clear message: acts of this inhuman nature will be met with the full force of the law. Trying the perpetrator as a juvenile would not only minimize the severity of the crime but also deny Yavuz and his loved ones the justice they deserve.
At present, the 16-year-old responsible for Yavuz’s death is being processed within the juvenile justice system and held for trial in juvenile court. For a crime this violent and irreversible, this is simply not sufficient. The perpetrator must be charged with murder and tried as an adult to reflect the gravity of the act.
Statistics show that in cases involving violent crimes, trying juvenile offenders as adults increases the likelihood of sentences that appropriately match the severity of the offense. Each year in the United States, approximately 50,000 juveniles are tried in adult courts, and these cases result in thousands of young offenders receiving sentences proportionate to the crimes they committed. This case—the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old—clearly demands that same level of accountability.
For these reasons, we urge the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey judicial system to re-evaluate this case and classify the perpetrator as an adult offender. Given the seriousness of the crime and the irreversible loss of a young life, society cannot afford to risk a repeat of such a tragedy.
We call on everyone who is overwhelmed by grief and anger to unite for justice. Stand with us in this critical demand for accountability. Your signature can help ensure that Yavuz’s memory is honored and that the death of a 17-year-old taken far too soon is met with the justice it inherently deserves.
Sign this petition to demand justice for Yavuz Durmaz. Together, let us stand firm and insist on a thorough and fair trial that truly reflects the seriousness of this crime.
