The Issue

As a woman, a mother, and a human being, I am deeply appalled by the recent judgment in a case that should have been about justice for the victims. Two young girls were brutally raped at knife-point, a traumatic ordeal that was not only indescribably violent but also recorded by their attackers. In a recent court decision, Judge Nicholas Rowland described the attack as merely a result of 'youthful misjudgment' and, shockingly, sentenced the perpetrators to merely a three-year rehabilitation order. This decision displays more empathy for the attackers than the victims who must carry the burden of this atrocity for life.

The crime committed against these young girls was not a minor mistake; it was a violent and heinous act. The mere idea of downplaying such an offense as 'youthful misjudgment' undermines the severity of the crime and sets a dangerous precedent for future cases. It sends a message that such violent acts can be excused as missteps rather than prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

These girls deserve justice—real justice that respects their suffering and holds the criminals accountable in a way that echoes the severity of their crime. A three-year rehabilitation order is a grossly inadequate penalty for rape, particularly aggravated by the wielding of a knife. It diminishes the life-long trauma inflicted on the victims and erodes public trust in our justice system.

It's imperative that we raise our voices collectively to demand that this judgment be revisited, and that the crime be reassessed with the seriousness it warrants. We seek to ensure that a custodial sentence is handed down to set the precedent that violent crimes, especially those involving sexual assault and weapons, are met with the appropriate judicial response.

Please sign this petition to advocate for revisiting this case and urge the legal system to render a decision that truly represents justice for the victims. Let us stand together to ensure our justice system reflects our values of protection, accountability, and support for victims. Your signature can contribute towards preventing a repeat of such judicial leniency and restoring faith in the justice that all citizens deserve.
