The Issue

A father and his yearling son. Two members of one of the rarest wolf families in North America. Both dead.

Two Mexican gray wolves from New Mexico's Sawtooth Pack were found dead after being caught in separate trapping incidents on private land near Datil, New Mexico in the spring of 2025. The father was five years old. His son was just a yearling. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agents have executed a federal search warrant as part of an ongoing investigation into their deaths. Conservation groups say the killings were not just illegal — they were brutal.

Mexican gray wolves are among the most endangered mammals on Earth. Every individual matters to the survival of the species. Every illegal killing sets back years of painstaking recovery work. These two wolves were part of a family contributing to the species' future. Now they are gone.

Under the Endangered Species Act, killing a Mexican gray wolf can result in criminal fines of up to $50,000, up to one year in prison, and civil penalties of up to $25,000 per violation. A combined reward of $104,500 is being offered for information leading to a conviction.

Federal investigators are doing their job. Now the U.S. Attorney's Office must do theirs.

Sign this petition to demand the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Mexico pursue the maximum criminal penalties against whoever killed these two wolves and send a clear message that endangered species cannot be killed with impunity.
