The Issue

When a sitting United States Senator is thrown to the ground, handcuffed, and dragged out of a federal building for trying to ask a question at a news conference — something is deeply wrong.

Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., was forcibly removed from a news conference and briefly detained by plainclothes officers while attempting to perform his constitutionally mandated oversight duties. His only words: “I am Sen. Alex Padilla. I have questions for the Secretary.”

What followed was an act of violence and disrespect that should shake us all: Padilla was shoved out of the room, slammed face-first to the ground, and handcuffed by federal agents with FBI vests. No charges. No justification. Just intimidation.

“This is outrageous, dictatorial, and shameful,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded answers, calling the incident “something that sickened my stomach.”

This isn’t just about Senator Padilla. It’s about protecting democracy from those who think they can silence oversight and suppress accountability. Whether you agree with Padilla’s politics or not, no member of Congress should be met with violence for doing their job.

We demand a full and transparent investigation into the federal agents involved in this assault. There must be accountability — because if this can happen to a U.S. Senator, it can happen to any of us.

Add your name to call for an immediate investigation into this attack on Senator Padilla and our democracy.
