Demand Justice for the Animals Killed at Steadfast Wildlife Rehab

The Issue

What happened at Steadfast Wildlife Rehab in Tifton was not an accident. It was a deliberate act.

Someone broke through a fence to enter a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility and killed animals that were there to be healed. These animals were injured, orphaned, or vulnerable. They were defenseless. They were under professional care, protected by law, and on a path back to the wild. Instead, they were violently taken.

This attack has shaken the people who dedicate their lives to caring for wildlife and horrified a community that expects such places to be safe havens. The owner of Steadfast Wildlife Rehab has described the incident as “nothing but evil,” and it is hard to find words that better capture the cruelty of killing animals whose only crime was being in need of help.

We are calling on the Tift County Sheriff’s Office, the Tift County District Attorney, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to pursue a full, thorough investigation and to bring criminal charges against whoever is responsible. This case must not be minimized or quietly closed. Intentionally killing animals at a wildlife rehabilitation facility is a serious crime that demands serious consequences.

Justice in this case is about more than punishment. It is about sending a clear message that violence against animals, especially those under state-licensed care, will not be tolerated. Wildlife rehabilitators provide an essential public service. When their facilities are attacked, it threatens not only animals but the people who care for them and the broader mission of conservation and education.

The public deserves transparency as this investigation moves forward. The animals killed deserve accountability. And the people who devote their time, resources, and hearts to protecting wildlife deserve to know that the law will stand behind them.

We urge law enforcement and prosecutors to act decisively. Identify who did this. Hold them accountable under Georgia law. Make it clear that cruelty disguised as trespass or vandalism is still cruelty, and it will be treated as such.

A place meant for healing was violated. Justice is the only acceptable response.
