Shacoby Kenny, a Black man from our city, tragically died while under custody at the Suffolk County House of Correction, known as South Bay Jail. This case strikes home for me because it underscores a painful and relentless narrative that is all too familiar—deaths in custody that are dismissed, delayed, or concealed behind cold official statements. As a resident of Boston, I know that Shacoby Kenny’s story could have been mine or someone else's from our tight-knit community. Silence, complacency, and inaction are the forces that allow these deaths to continue unabated.

For too long, cases like Shacoby's have been swept under the rug, leaving families and communities devastated and without answers. Each unexplained death in custody adds weight to the communal grief we carry and the distrust we feel toward those tasked with our protection. It's essential for justice and the safety of our communities that we stop burying these tragedies in bureaucracy or rhetoric.
