I am a woman passionately advocating for justice for every individual who deserves it, and today, I am seeking justice for one such person - Nisha. A young girl in Uganda, she was the victim of a horrifying act of abuse committed by her stepfather. Disaster struck again when the abuser was granted bail despite his appalling crime. This petition seeks to appeal to Uganda's criminal justice system to ensure the stepfather is held responsible for his action, not allowed to walk freely in society, threatening Nisha's safety. It's a known fact that sexual violence is widespread in Uganda, with approximately one in four women between 15 and 49 having experienced sexual violence at some point in their lives according to the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS, 2016). This statistic is unacceptable and alarming. We cannot allow Nisha's abuser to set a precedent for other offenders to escape the justice they warrant. By fighting for Nisha, we are fighting for the one in four women who have suffered similar horrific experiences. It is high time Uganda's judicial system takes stringent measures against such vile acts, starting by denying bail to Nisha's stepfather.
