The Vietnamese community in Victoria are devastated and heartbroken to hear of the brutal attack on a 60-year-old retail worker—a trusted member of our community, the incident happened in Sunshine, Victoria. His devastating injuries led to death bring a profound sense of injustice and fear to our vibrant area. This heinous act does not just affect him and his family but the whole Vietnamese community in Victoria and everyone who feels safe in our local shops.

The alleged perpetrators of this vicious crime, a group of youths, have caused irreparable harm. And yet, shockingly, some have been granted bail. This sends a dangerous message that such violent acts can be met with leniency. We cannot allow this to be the precedent in our society. Justice demands that all individuals involved are held accountable and face the full extent of the law in court.

Statistics reveal that violent offences carried out by youth gangs have been rising in Melbourne's west. In 2022 alone, incidents increased by 8%, which reflects a rapidly growing problem that needs urgent attention. Ensuring harsher penalties for such attacks will not only serve as justice for those affected but will also act as a deterrent to potential offenders who undermine public safety and community trust.

We call upon the Victorian judicial system to reconsider the bail granted to the young offenders involved in this attack and to impose severe penalties upon conviction. It’s essential that we protect our communities by showing that violence will not be tolerated and that justice will be served.
