Martha Guizar was a person of faith, a woman who believed in the sanctity of life and community. She was struck and killed in what should have been the safest of places, a church parking lot at Madonna del Sasso. Her death was caused by Lucy Rios, who hit and dragged her with a car, brutally taking her away from her family – a daughter and three cherished grandchildren.

Despite the grave nature of this incident, the district attorney has decided not to hold Lucy Rios fully accountable. Instead of facing a felony charge for her actions, Lucy is being allowed to plead down to a Misdemeanor Vehicle Manslaughter. This is a clear miscarriage of justice. Lucy's history of speeding tickets has not been considered, and her current charges have been downgraded from 200 days of jail to just 100 days of home confinement, accompanied by an unacceptably lenient probation deal.

Martha deserved better, and we demand that the district attorney listens to the people and corrects this injustice. The office must reconsider their stance and pursue felony charges, reflecting the serious and irreversible harm caused by Lucy Rios. We cannot stand by as our justice system fails to protect the memory of Martha and others affected by similar tragedies.
